Letter to the editor: Vaccine could help local covid issues

To the Editor:

In my practice, I discuss the covid-19 virus and vaccinations with my patients on a daily basis. Although I understand why many people are suspicious of the information reported in the media, I feel compelled to offer some real world, local statistics in an effort to allow people in the community to make informed decisions which may have a great effect on their family and neighbors.

Over the last 18 months and especially the last six weeks, I have seen a significant amount of needless suffering. Many people in our community have been affected by the virus. I have seen mothers, fathers, grandparents, spouses, brothers and sisters all hurt by the effects of covid-19.

Over the last 6 weeks, my practice has seen an explosion of cases. From February to June this year, we saw a total of 31 cases (only one was hospitalized). But since July 1st, we have seen over 120 cases. Over 75% of the recent cases are in unvaccinated people. These patients have done much worse than those that have been vaccinated. In fact, the unvaccinated group has accounted for over 15 hospitalizations, one death, and several others on ventilators.

Without a doubt, many hospitalizations can be prevented by vaccinations. Preventing hospitalizations is extremely important, since 20-30% of those hospitalized do not make it out alive. In addition, we are seeing more severe cases in younger people. Please give extra thought to these local numbers, when considering the covid-19 vaccinations. Also, keep those in mind who depend upon you.
