Authorities are investigating a “suspicious” death after a body was found in a vehicle at the Lake City Home Depot.
Lake City police officers responded to Home Depot at 12:17 a.m. Tuesday after a body was found unresponsive in a Tesla car.
According to Greg Burnsed, an LCPD spokesperson, the deceased is a male in his early 20s. His identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
Burnsed would not say how the person died or go into details of why officers and detectives have labeled the death suspicious.
“I can’t say that,” he said. “Any unattended death until the cause of death has been determined by the medical examiner’s office is going to be suspicious.”
Officers secured the scene and detectives from LCPD as well as investigators from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Third Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office processed the scene until just before 10 a.m. Tuesday.
The body has been sent to the medical examiner’s office in Jacksonville to determine the cause of death. Burnsed said the autopsy results will let officers know what is the next step in their investigation.
“You can’t go back and do things afterwards,” Burnsed said. “You can’t go back and process the scene.
“We’re trying to cover all bases, that way if something pops up that’s not right, we have it processed and ready to start moving forward with that.”
Anyone with information regarding the incident is encouraged to contact the LCPD at 386-752-4343 and speak with Cpl. Rose.
