The Lake City Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting in northwest Lake City early Sunday morning.
According to an LCPD release, officers responded to NW Long Street at 3:42 a.m. Sunday when its gunshot detection system reported gunfire.
The responding officers found 19-year-old Nicholas Rashard Whitehead suffering from a gunshot wound. While officers provided aid to Whitehead, who was then transported to HCA Lake City Hospital, the release stated he died from his injuries.
According to LCPD, the scene was secured by its officers as well as deputies from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office. The scene was processed by Crime Scene Investigators from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
Investigators from the Lake City Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division along with Investigators from the State Attorney’s Office began speaking with the victim’s family and possible witnesses.
