After a lengthy standout Saturday night and into Sunday morning, authorities took a Lake City man into custody on attempted murder charges.

According to a Lake City Police Department release, officers responded to a NW Wilson Street residence around 8 p.m. Saturday to the reports of a shooting.

Responding officers found two victims with gunshot wounds, including one with a wound to their stomach. The victims were transported to nearby trauma unit.

While administering aid to the victims, the suspect - 40-year-old Brooks Smith - retreated into the residence, the report states.

While establishing a secure perimeter around the residence, LCPD requested the assistance of the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team. Once on scene, the SWAT team's hostage negotiator initiated communication with Smith.

According to the release, Smith fired shots from inside the residence through windows at officers.

After a five-hour standoff, Smith was taken into custody without further incident. Smith was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation and subsequently booked into the Columbia County Detention Center.

“This successful resolution underscores the unwavering commitment of our local law enforcement agencies to work together to protect and serve the community,” Lake City Police Chief Gerald Butler said in a release, thanking the CCSO, Florida Highway Patrol, Florida Department of Agriculture
and Consumer Services Law Enforcement Division, Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office, Lake City Fire
Department, Columbia County Fire Department, and Century Ambulance for their assistance.

“These men and women showed courage and dedication in the face of danger, while ensuring the safety and well-being of our citizens,” Columbia County Sheriff Mark Hunter added in the release. “Our thoughts are with the victims as they receive medical care and support during this challenging time.”
