Infant dead, two others seriously injured in wreck

An infant is dead and two other people suffered serious injuries after a two-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, a 4-month-old boy died after the SUV he was riding in was hit by a different vehicle. Another passenger and the driver of the SUV — a 63-year-old woman and a 65-year-old man from Lake City, respectively — were seriously injured. The driver of the vehicle the SUV crashed into was a 61-year-old Mayo man.

The FHP report states that the Mayo man was driving north on U.S. Highway 441 as he approached the Southwest Hillcrest Street intersection on the south end of Lake City. The SUV was also heading north on 441 before slowing down to turn left onto Hillcrest Street ahead of the 61-year-old. That vehicle failed to stop, however, causing a collision with the SUV as it hit its rear bumper. The Mayo man did not suffer any injuries.

The report also states that all parties involved were wearing their seatbelts, with the 4-month-old boy strapped into a child restraint.
