Hurricane Ian: Suwannee County declares state of emergency

LIVE OAK — In a meeting that lasted less than a minute, a local state of emergency was declared Monday morning for Suwannee County in advance of Hurricane Ian.

The Suwannee County Board of County Commissioners met in an emergency meeting Monday morning in the county’s Emergency Operations Center and quickly passed the emergency declaration without any discussion.

The county declaration follows Gov. Ron DeSantis declaring a state of emergency for the entire state on Sunday.

According to the 11 a.m. update Monday from the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Ian is expected to continue rapidly strengthening as it approaches Cuba.

The storm is forecast to approach the gulf coast of Florida on Wednesday into Thursday. It is expected to make landfall Friday morning in the Big Bend area.

SHS homecoming postponed

Suwannee High announced Monday afternoon that all homecoming activities scheduled for this week have been moved to the week of Oct. 14. The postponement includes the homecoming parade, Bulldog Bash and SHS Athletics Hall of Fame induction.

Suwannee’s game against Taylor County is still scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday, according to SHS.
