A homeless man went car shopping after hours Saturday and got caught red handed.

Jermaine Maxwell, 37, was found by Lake City police officers in the rear of I-75 Auto on Saturday in a back fenced area of the business.

According to a Lake City Police Department release, video surveillance also showed Maxwell within a building at the dealership.

When arrested, Maxwell was found possessing numerous tools along with many gift cards, credit cards and debit cards that were not his.

“Maxwell had a bag of miscellaneous items in his possession that appeared to be random belongings from multiple other peoples’ vehicles,” Lake City Police Chief Gerald Butler said in a release. “Our Criminal Investigation Division is hard at work now trying to identify other victims based on the items in his possession.”

Maxwell was charged with armed burglary, possession of burglary tools, and tampering with a witness.
During Maxwell’s arrest, synthetic marijuana was also found in his possession, and he was charged accordingly.

Maxwell remains in the Columbia County Jail on a $85,000 bond.
