Things aren’t always what they seem.

A search during a routine traffic stop Saturday evening turned up what appeared to be ordinary pain medication. However, according to a Lake City Police Department release, those pills were actually laced with fentanyl.

At 7:49 p.m. Saturday, an LCPD officer stopped Joshua Diston, 32, for failure to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of NW Wilston Street and NW Dixie Avenue. Diston, the release states, authorized LCPD searching his car.

That search, according to the release, led to the discovery of 340.25 grams of pressed pills in three zippered plastic bags.

A test of the pills revealed fentanyl, the release states.

“This incident is a reminder to never take any medication not prescribed specifically to them, or any over the counter medication not in its original container,” Lake City Police Chief Gerald Butler said in the release. “These pills were pressed to look like 800 mg Ibuprofen tablets and were only determined to be illicit as a result of testing by the officer after suspicion based on their not being in a proper container.”

Diston was arrested for trafficking in fentanyl.
