A former Lake City daycare employee has been charged with aggravated child abuse after a child was unresponsive last month.
Alyssa Thompson, 30, was arrested Monday following an investigation that began when a child was reported unresponsive at the Wee Crews Too daycare on NW Gwen Lake Avenue on April 20.
A Lake City Police Department release stated that officers and emergency medical personnel immediately provided assistance to the child when called at 2:30 p.m. on April 20. The infant was then transported to a medical facility for emergency treatment.
During the LCPD investigation, which included reviewing surveillance footage from the daycare as well as interviews, officers discovered that Thompson physically abused the child, causing severe injuries that led to the child becoming unresponsive.
The LCPD release adds that the daycare is cooperating with the investigation and terminated Thompson as an employee.
“This is a deeply disturbing case,” Lake City Police Chief Gerald Butler said. “Our thoughts are with the child and their family. We are committed to thoroughly investigating incidents like this and ensuring that those responsible are held fully accountable.”
The investigation into the incident remains active.
