Covid-19: Drive-through testing to start

Drive-thru covid-19 testing is being offered on a limited basis in Columbia County, health officials say, but it’s not available to everyone.

Just like walk-in test sites, the drive-thru locations will only administer tests to people who meet certain criteria, according to the Florida Department of Health in Columbia County. Only those who are considered “Priority 1 and 2” are eligible, according to the department.

“These priorities include: healthcare facility workers with symptoms, patients 65 years of age and older with symptoms, patients with underlying conditions with symptoms, First Responders with symptoms,” the department wrote in a statement. “All others that do not meet this criteria will be referred to their primary care physician.”

Eligible individuals who meet testing guidelines established by the Centers for Disease Control and Florida Department of Health must pre-register and schedule an appointment by calling the local office at 386-397-6676. The Health Department is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

There is no charge for the test administered at locations in Columbia County. Those who meet all the conditions will be informed of the time, date and testing location over the phone.

The next testing date is on Wednesday. Additional testing dates will be organized based on community need, according to the department.

It should go without saying, but a vehicle is required for drive-thru testing, the department wrote. “Due to the increased risk of contamination as well as current shortages of personal protective equipment, walk-ups are not permitted at this time,” the department wrote. “Each person to be tested must be seated next to a working window.”

Only those needing a test should be inside the vehicle.

Anyone receiving a test should also bring a photo ID containing their name and date of birth. This can include a driver’s license, passport or state-issued identification.

Healthcare workers in protective gear will give instructions to drive-thru users.

The test is “minimally invasive,” according to the department. Results are not immediate and may take one to two days.

Results will be communicated by phone.

“Please be patient — calling back to check on your results will not expedite the process,” the department wrote.
