FGC also closed Monday
Columbia County Schools will remain closed Monday from Hurricane Helene.
As will Florida Gateway College and both Hamilton and Lafayette county schools.
Columbia County Superintendent Lex Carswell announced Saturday that the district won’t open Monday as many of the school facilities are still awaiting power restoration.
”I know that the past few days have been difficult,” Carswell said in a release. “We are grateful for our first responders and many linesmen who have come into our community to restore our infrastructure. It is in times like this that we need to exercise patience and extend much grace. We are currently waiting for power to be restored to many schools/buildings. We know that many traffic lights are still out around the county. Based on these factors and In order to keep everyone safe, we will not have school Monday, September 30.”
While the schools are not open Monday, the district’s 12-month contract employees are requested to return to work Monday - if able - to assist in verifying that the classrooms/offices are safe.
The district plans to make a decision about Tuesday once it has fully assessed the district’s facilities on Monday.
”Thank you for your patience and understanding,” Carswell added in the release. “Stay safe!”
FGC also announced Saturday that it will not reopen Monday, saying in a release that college officials will continue to closely monitor the recover efforts as it plans for a reopening.
In its announcement Saturday, the Hamilton County School District said it is making all efforts to be ready to return to session Tuesday.
