The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and Florida Department of Law Enforcement are investigating the death of an inmate at the Columbia County Detention Facility.
Details are limited due to the ongoing investigation, but the death Saturday morning is believed to be the result of a medical issue, according to a release from the sheriff’s office. Foul play is not suspected.
The identity of the inmate has not been released pending next of kin notifications.
“We are deeply saddened by this as we always try to provide the best care we can for our inmates,” Sheriff Mark Hunter said in the release. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the inmate’s family.”
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement was requested and is leading the investigation.
