FORT WHITE – A threat of a school shooting at Fort White High School has been deemed “not credible.”
According to a Columbia County Sheriff's Office release, deputies learned Friday night that a student had threatened a shooting at the school.
During an investigation Friday night, including talking with the student involved, deputies determined there was no real threat.
Sgt. Steven Khachigan, a CCSO spokesman, said he was not aware if it was a male student or female student or if multiple students were involved.
“I think it was just an off-hand comment that was made,” he said.
Over the weekend, according to the CCSO, rumors spread involving the same information but at additional schools.
“We are not aware of any credible threat to any of our campuses,” CCSO said in a release.
Khachigan added: “They had it taken care of Friday evening and then some other students started talking about and you know how the rumor mill goes. It started getting out of hand.”
Khachigan said deputies continue to investigate the threat, and according to the release, the CCSO continues to work with Columbia County School District officials to address any safety concerns at any school locations.
Criminal charges could occur pending that investigation.
“It's possible that criminal charges are applicable,” Khachigan said.
