PREP ROUNDUP: Suwannee baseball duo sign with St. Johns River State College, area scores for Friday/Saturday

Suwannee’s Tyson Greene and Peyton Waters signed their letters of intent to play at St. Johns River State college on Saturday.

While Greene has been limited to just four games this season, Waters is currently hitting .419 for the Bulldogs (10-4) with team-highs of three home runs and 14 RBIs.

Both players were named to the LCR’s all-area team as a juniors in 2021.

Here are results and stats for Friday's baseball and softball games, and Saturday's flag football games in the area:

BASEBALL

— Suwannee 9, Stanton 5: The Bulldogs (10-4) rallied with seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings to top the Blue Devils (8-6) at home Friday night. Easton Kirby and Tyson Greene each had two RBIs, while Coby Campbell, Carston Palmer and Matthew Jenkins drove in one run each. Ethan Layton got the win in relief, pitching 1/3 of an inning after Matthew Gill started and went 4 2/3 with four runs — three earned — allowed on five hits and two walks with eight strikeouts.

— Branford 10, Hawthorne 1: The Buccaneers (5-3-1) rolled past the Hornets (0-7) at home Friday night.

SOFTBALL

— Fort White 4, Union County 1: The Indians (5-4) knocked off the undefeated Tigers (9-1) at home Friday night behind a four-run third inning. Ciara Byrd, Kadence Compton and Kaitlyn Suggs each had one RBI in the inning, with Madison Brown, Hannah LeBleu, Byrd and Compton all scoring. Compton threw a one-hitter in the circle, striking out 14 with no earned runs and one walk allowed.

— Branford 1, Taylor County 0: The Buccaneers (8-2) walked off for a District 6-1A win over the Bulldogs in the eighth inning Friday night. 

FLAG FOOTBALL

— Suwannee 13, Leon 6; Navarre 26, Suwannee 0: The Bulldogs (6-3) split their contests at the Capital City Classic on Saturday in Tallahassee, beating the Lions (3-5) and losing to the Raiders (2-5).

TRACK & FIELD

— Florida Relays: Branford’s Nathalia Veal was the area highlight at the Florida Relays on Friday at UF’s Percy Bead Track. Veal placed fourth in the pole vault with a jump of 11-03.75 meters.
