PREP ROUNDUP: Fort White, Suwannee advance to district semis in baseball

BASEBALL

— Fort White 7, Hamilton County 1: The No. 6 seed Indians (4-15) upset the No. 3 seed Trojans (14-9) in the District 6-1A quarterfinals on Monday at Branford High behind a combined two-hitter. Gavin Crews nearly went the distance, throwing 6 1/3 while allowing one run — no earned — on those two hits and three walks with six strikeouts. Chauncey Mays led FWHS offensively with three RBIs and two runs scored on a 2-for-4 day with a double. Patrick Kennedy, Hayden Adams and Crews had an RBI apiece. Matthew Pitts also scored two runs on a 2-for-3 day. The Indians will face No. 2 seed Union County in the district semifinals on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Branford.

— Suwannee 21, Gadsden County 0: Easton Kirby went 2 for 4 with a home run, a double and four RBIs to lead the No. 3 seed Bulldogs (9-13) to a run-rule victory over the No. 6 seed Jaguars (5-18) in four innings in the District 2-4A quarterfinals at home Monday night. Braxtyn Green went 3 for 3 with three RBIs, Chason Blocker also had three RBIs, Dillon Greene and PJ Davis each had two RBIs, and Keith White, Connor Thompson, Logan Brooks, Ethan Layton and JD Cherry all had one RBI for SHS, which scored 15 runs in the first inning. Noah Lopez, Thompsin, Davis and Green combined to throw a two-hitter, each pitching one inning with seven combined strikeouts. SHS will travel to No. 2 seed Wakulla for the semifinals on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

— Hilliard 8, Branford 7: The No. 5 seed Buccaneers (10-10) saw their season end with an extra-innings loss to the No. 4 seed Red Flashes (12-8) in the District 6-1A quarterfinals on Monday night at home. HHS scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game before winning it with a run in the eighth inning, earning a matchup with top-seeded Lafayette in the semis on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Branford. Caden Coker had a solo home run in the loss for the Buccaneers while Camden Gaskins had two RBIs and Andres Maysonet, Dawson Cannon, Troy Roberts and Gavin Barnes all had one RBI. Cannon pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs — none earned — on five hits and four walks with three strikeouts for BHS. Ward allowed the other five runs — three earned — on five hits and four walks with one strikeout in two innings.

SOFTBALL

— Bell 8, Lafayette 3: The No. 5 seed Hornets (7-15) saw their season end with a loss in the District 6-1A quarterfinals at the No. 4 Bulldogs (5-14) on Monday night. LHS was held to just three hits, with Ella Hancock scoring two of them, while Emma Swann pitched a complete game with only three of the eight runs earned on 11 hits and three walks with five strikeouts. BHS travels to face top-seeded Branford in the district semifinals on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
