PREP ROUNDUP: Columbia tops Mandarin to open Battle on the Island

Behind 23 points apiece from Zamarion Jones and Zavian Douglas, Columbia’s boys basketball team topped Mandarin 80-66 on Thursday afternoon in the teams’ opener at the Battle on the Island at Fleming Island High School.

The Tigers (4-3) trailed 39-38 at the half before outscoring the Mustangs (6-3) by 15 in the second half. Marlin Haywood added eight points for CHS while Justice Kelly had seven, Noah Wilson and Bobby Wilson had six, Jalen Gaskins had five and Murkail Cray had two.

Columbia will face the winner of Ribault-Lake Wales in the semifinals on Friday at 4 p.m.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

— Lafayette 54, Aucilla Christian 18: Havyn Richardson scored 13 points, Ella Hancock added 12 points and Jada Copeland finished with 10 points to lead the Hornets (7-2) to a blowout win over the Warriors (6-4) at home Thursday night.

— Baker County 59, Suwannee 35

GIRLS SOCCER

— Williston 5, Lafayette 3: Jean Paz-Garcia scored two goals and assisted another to Carra Clark, but the Hornets (9-3) lost to the Red Devils (6-3) at home Thursday. LHS goalkeeper Kylee-Ann Richard made nine saves in defeat.
