MADISON — With point guard Eriel Baker sidelined with an injury, Columbia’s girls basketball team turned the ball over 24 times and lost to Madison County 63-49 on the road Thursday night.

The Cowgirls (10-3) overcame a 23-12 halftime deficit, outscoring the Tigers (6-6) by 17 in the third quarter before winning the fourth by eight. Zuri Hollie led CHS with 15 points in the loss, while Ayesha Broxey had 14 points for an offense that had only six assists the whole game.

Jolena Gardner added nine points and Mariah Cox had seven for the Tigers.

“We need players to step it up when a teammate is out. That did not happen tonight,” Columbias head coach Anthony Perry said. “Columbia girls basketball is supposed to be tough defensively and take advantage of mistakes for quick offensive scores. We lacked toughness tonight and didn’t take care of the ball, that’s why we lost to Madison on the road in their hostile environment. Tigers are better than what we displayed on the court tonight. You can’t be scared and perform well.”
