Florida Gateway College point guard Antewan Webber was named to the NJCAA Division II All-American first team on Tuesday.

Webber was the sole freshman selected to the first team and is FGC’s first basketball All-American since the re-establishment of athletics in 2017. He led the Timberwolves to Region 8 and South Atlantic District B titles this season while also notching the Region 8 Player of the Year honor.

“I’m speechless, to be honest,” said Webber, who has a 4.0 GPA. “I’m stunned by the news. It really comes down to coach (Charles Ruise) for encouraging me and having faith in me throughout the season, so it’s kudos to him and (assistant) coach CC (Wilson) and my teammates.”

As a walk-on from Minnesota, Webber quickly became FGC's top player and led the team in scoring with 16.3 points per game while shooting 48% from the field. In addition to being a consistent offensive force for the Timberwolves, Webber was also second on the team with 6.1 rebounds per game while dishing out 2.9 assists with 1.2 steals.

FGC advanced to the NJCAA tournament for the second straight season and finished the year 15-13.

“We’re still blown away. We’re excited,” Ruise said. “This is an opportunity for Antewan to see that he has set the standard for what we are trying to do with this program. You’ve got to be well-rounded. First, you’ve got to be the student, then you’ve got to be the athlete. Antewan has demonstrated nothing but that, and we’re proud to have him represent the FGC Timberwolves. It means a lot to the program.

“He’s deserves it. It helps me get him to see how much he brings to the table as a student-athlete.”
