Guards, inmates exposed to dangerous drug at CCI
From staff reports
Two inmates are dead and an unspecified number of prison employees are at risk following exposure to a powerful drug Saturday afternoon at Columbia Correctional Institution, according to a news release from the Florida Department of Corrections.
Three inmates were found unresponsive from a suspected drug overdose at 3:15 p.m. Saturday, the release said. Security and medical staff initiated life-saving measures, but two died. The third inmate is in stable condition, the release said.
The responding prison staff members are being evaluated at an outside hospital for possible exposure to a dangerous drug.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is the lead investigative agency on the inmate fatalities, with assistance from the Department’s Office of Inspector General.
“At this time our focus is on the health and swift recovery of the officers and individuals involved,” Michelle Glady of the Florida Department of Corrections said in the release. "The facility has been placed on lockdown, while we provide FDLE with everything they need to investigate this incident.”
Visitation at CCI will be canceled on Sunday, the release said.
