PREP VOLLEYBALL: Columbia takes down Eastside

Lady Tigers win home finale in three sets

Columbia’s volleyball team took care of business in its home finale Tuesday night.

After sweeping the Lady Rams earlier this season, the Lady Tigers were victorious again in the teams' second matchup of the season. Columbia capitalized on a bevy of unearned points which helped the Lady Tigers capture a straight set (25-11, 25-10, 25-20) win over Eastside.

Columbia was led by senior captain Erica Faulkner who recorded a game-high eight kills and 10 digs. Asherah Collins tallied five aces and Danielle Thomson added 13 assists as the Lady Tigers tallied their second-straight victory. Columbia (8-11) was rarely threatened by a reeling Eastside (1-16) team which was stifled thanks to strong defensive play by the Lady Tigers.

“They had fun and played as a team,” Columbia coach Trudy Andrews said after the game. “I was worried that after the first set that they would go flat, but they did just fine. They kept playing their game so I’m proud of them.”

Columbia eased past Eastside in the first two sets. The Lady Tigers had no trouble setting up their offense, allowing Faulkner and Collins to take advantage off the Lady Rams' weak front.

The Lady Tigers, though, regressed in the third. Columbia couldn't pull away from Eastside in the final set. The Lady Rams managed to knot the score at 20-20 before the Lady Tigers scored the next five points to complete the sweep.

Columbia aims for its third straight win when it travels to Fort White on Friday (4:30 p.m.). The Lady Tigers hope to extend their streak before hosting Lake Weir in the district tournament play-in game on Monday night.
