Clay Electric releases statement on Hurricane Irma

All Clay Electric district offices will be closed to the public Monday, Sept. 11 and Tuesday, Sept. 12 so personnel can focus on restoration efforts after Hurricane Irma.

Hurricane Irma poses a serious threat to Clay Electric’s 14-county service area. The hurricane will impact the service area directly and cause very serious damage to the power distribution system. Although the system is built to withstand hurricane-force winds, outages will be caused by falling trees, tree limbs and other debris.

Due to the magnitude of the storm, Clay Electric members should prepare to go without power for up to a week or longer. Clay Electric personnel, along with help from other co-ops, will begin restoration efforts as soon as it is safe to do so, and will make every effort to restore power as quickly and safely as possible.

“We know this is a major inconvenience for everyone,” said Derick Thomas, director of the co-op’s Member & Public Relations Department. “Our families will be facing this difficult situation just like everyone else. We will make it through this together.”

Here are some things to keep in mind:
    •    If you or a family member depend on power for medical reasons, have somewhere to go that is out of harm’s way, or have a generator handy.
    •    If you use a generator, know how to operate it safely, and do not hook it up to your home’s wiring system. It could backfeed into our distribution system and kill or injure personnel making repairs.
    •    When venturing outdoors after the storm, be careful of low-hanging or downed power lines, which may still be energized.
    •    To report an outage, members are encouraged to report outages via our online outage report form. Members can report an outage by calling 888-434-9844, but this line may be busy due to the large volume of calls expected.

Information and updates will be shared on Facebook and ClayElectric.com throughout the restoration process.
