A lot to love

Columbia boys and girls tennis teams sweep Middleburg 7-0.

Columbia has provided plenty of order on the court this season and Tuesday was no different.

Both the boys and girls dominated the Middleburg Broncos at home, coming away with 7-0 victories.

Four boys and three Lady Tigers swept their single matches on an afternoon that was more of a prep for Thursday’s crucial district match against Atlantic Coast than it was a competition.

“Middleburg had already kind of forewarned us that they were a team in transition and growing, which is why a lot of it was concentrating on our strokes,” Columbia girls coach Tabatha McMahon said. “I actually asked some of the girls that once you get up 6-0, go ahead and start to be a little more aggressive and come in and practice some of the shots.”

Megan Zahnle, Chase Broome and Faith Johnson all won their single matches 8-0 while Cassidy Lear and Brittany Helms won theirs 8-1. Lear and Helms won doubles 8-2 but it was Zahnle and Broome who handed Middleburg its fourth shutout of the day with an 8-0 win as Columbia’s No. 2 doubles.

Individually, the girls have only lost one match so far this season.

Akash Ghandi, Colin Broome, Reid Wehrli and Christian Chiong all won their singles matches 8-0 for the boys. Chiong replaced Brandon Helms as the boys’ No. 5 singles player after Helms fractured a bone in his arm earlier in the week.

Middleburg’s No. 3 Keaton Tudor was the only Bronco to get a point off of the boys before losing to Daniel Rendel 8-2.

Ghandi and Broome won doubles 8-2 and Wehrli and Chiong won 8-1.

“Our serves worked really well today,” Columbia boys coach Tom Moore said. “When your serve is working, the rest of the game seems to go to flow. Even in this wind switching from west to south, it was a good day.”
