I firmly resolve ...

Ken Perkins, a pastor at Orchard Community Church and trainer at Step 24-Hour Fitness, trains for the Gateway Classic at the Lake City Community College on April 25. ‘As a pastor and believer I’m supposed to do everything as if it was for Christ,’ Perkins said. ‘I don’t have to take shortcuts in life. My personal goal is to be in the best health.’ JASON MATTHEW WALKER/Lake City Reporter

A random poll of people in western Lake City on Dec. 30 revealed an array of resolutions for 2009.

Joe Panasci, 34, of Jacksonville was in the new Food Lion. He is the district manager. Panasci said he has resolved to get in better shape by working out and eating better.

Michelle McCollum, 35, of Lake City is the owner and head trainer at tep 24-Hour Fitness. While McCollum said she does not make resolutions, she and other trainers can help people like Panasci.

“We get with the client and see what they want to do,” McCollum said. “Weight gain, weight loss, lifestyle change. ... We have fit camps for people who want to lose weight quickly.”

The three-day a week camps are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, she said.

At Step 24-Hour Fitness, they specialize in personal training, she said. There is a guarantee the client will see the results they want if they follow the instructions from trainers, she said.

Many people simply need a few sessions to learn how to begin their own program, she said.

“It’s all about educating the client,” McCollum said. “We like to help the client become independent. So they can go on their own.”

Brandy Meeks, 23, of La Fleur de Jeunesse Day Spa Salon, said she plans to run more 5-K races in 2009. She ran her first in 2008, she said.

Tegan Bischke, 23, a tanning specialist at Island Shack Tanning Salon, said she wants to quit smoking and buy a house. She wants to quit smoking after eight years of that habit.

Her husband Peter Bischke, 28, does not smoke, she said. She started on a dare from friends. Now she wants to quit for her health. She and her husband have also resolved to buy a house this year, she said.

Monica Macchio, 28, of Lake City is also a tanning specialist at Island Tanning Shack. Her resolution is to make her home more family-oriented, so that her boyfriend and she enjoy an even more pleasant life with their 2-year-old son Angelo,

Macchio said her 2008 resolution to lose weight after having a baby was reached. She did this by diet and “lots of exercise,” she said.

James Pinkard, 25, of Live Oak is a grocery associate at Food Lion. His resolution is “to make more money.” His plan to keep this resolution, he said, is to be more productive at his job and to stick to the resolution.

Linda Desangles, 49, of Cheek and Scott Pharmacy is a customer service representative. Like many other people polled last Tuesday, Desangles has no resolution.

“Every time I wake up,” she said, “it’s a new day. I am happy and healthy. New Year’s Day is my least favorite holiday. It’s just like every other day.

“You can (be) resolute all you want, but you shouldn’t have to start on New Year’s. You make a plan, and you’ve got to stick with it.”

And so 2008 has ended, and while Desangles and others feel no compunction to promise changes, some people have started their keeping their resolutions. Still others may already have surrendered by today — Jan. 4, 2009.
