Tuesday marks the return to action for many of Columbia High and Fort White High’s sports programs.
For some programs it’s been a chance to catch a breath, while others have used the Christmas break to their advantage building momentum for the second half of the season.
No team has built momentum more than the Columbia Lady Tigers basketball team.
The Lady Tigers cruised through to a Christmas tournament victory over Deltona on Wednesday and return to the court on Tuesday to take on Hamilton County High.
Sharmayne Edwards leads the Lady Tigers after taking home tournament MVP honors.
Columbia High’s boys soccer team will also enter on a bit of a hot-streak after finishing third in its annual Christmas tournament.
The Tigers defeated St. Francis 6-0 to take home the third place finish last Monday and will take on Gainesville on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
The Columbia High boys basketball team will return at Lake Weir on Tuesday at 7:30 in a game the Tigers will try to use to keep the momentum gained from a win against Miami South West on Tuesday.
The Tigers held South West to 16 second half points in their last game, and coach Trey Hosford was very pleased with their performance.
The Lady Tigers soccer team will enter on an even keel, but still be in game shape after competing in the Bobcat Invitational.
Columbia split its final two games with Boone and Lincoln on Saturday.
The Lady Tigers defeated Boone 4-3, before falling to Lincoln 5-0.
Shelby Widergren had two goals while Erika Hall and Chantalle Violette scored one each.
“It was a good tournament that served its purpose,” coach Keith Mcloughlin said.
“It was great to prepare for Forest and it will help our team having had Hailey Dicks back from a knee injury.”
Columbia takes on Forest at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Fort White’s Lady Indians will try to keep going after a final round win over Umatilla in the Lady Rattler and Friends Holiday tournament.
The Lady Indians finished 1-2 in the tournament before defeating Umatilla 39-14.
Tara Miller scored 13 points to lead the Lady Indians in the game. Da’Leecia Armstrong scored 10 points and Bregay Harris added four points and 12 rebounds.
“We played well, and Bregay Harris was nominated for the team MVP,” coach James Jackson said. “Miller was nominated for the tournament MVP.”
The Lady Indians return on Tuesday against Williston at 7 p.m.
