For the second time in three years, Columbia County Resources Inc. (CCR) earned national recognition for the Columbia County Fair from the International Association of Fairs and Expositions.

The IAFE offers awards for excellence in 13 categories related to agriculture and competitive programs and events. Fairs nationwide compete against one another based on attendance.

The Columbia County Fair program that was awarded national distinction — beating out fairs of equal size — was started three years ago and is called the Barnyard Olympics.

It is designed to highlight the competitiveness of individual children who attempt to win grand and reserve prize honors in each of the fair’s livestock shows.

“Obviously we are ecstatic because this is the second time we’ve won a national award,” said Wanda Jones, secretary/treasurer for CCR. “We devised these games to be an ice-breaker for children who entered the livestock events.

“It was our idea but the parents pitched in and did all the organizing, it was wonderful,” she said, adding that Janet and Staci Ballance were instrumental to its success.

Three teams of children ranging in age from 8 to 18 competed in sun-flower seed spitting, a water race, egg relay race, puzzle hide and seek and a sack race.

The IAFE Agriculture Awards are sponsored by John Deere.

This is the second national award that CCR has earned in the past three years. It won two years ago for a program called Cowboys and Kids held in conjunction with the Florida Gateway ProRodeo.

Columbia County Resources has also submitted similar award applications to the Florida Federation of Fairs, which will be presented at its annual convention in the spring.
