We are blessed

“So this is Christmas, and what have you done,” John Lennon asked us 37 years ago this holiday season.

In Columbia County, we can be proud to answer that question.

Consider the past two weeks alone.

During the past two weeks, Columbia County has donated tons of non-perishable food to community food banks, including Food Bank of Suwannee Valley.

During the past two weeks, Columbia County has donated 158 blankets to Blank-Fest to help warm the homeless.

During the past two weeks, Columbia County has donated $5,000 worth of toys for 900 children in needy families through the Christmas Dream Machine.

During the past two weeks, Columbia County has joined with 285 other cities nationwide to lay wreaths at memorial headstones for veterans through Wreaths Across America.

During the past two weeks, troops of Columbia County Girl Scouts continued a five-year tradition by helping other children construct Christmas ornaments and Hanukkah crafts.

During the past two weeks, dozens of Columbia County residents ran or walked to raise money for the Third Judicial Circuit Court Guardian Ad Litem program in the Jingle Bell Run.

During the past two weeks, hundreds of Columbia County children have been treated free to a day in the snow, pictures and chats with Santa and a larger-than-life puppet show.

During the past two weeks, almost 400 Christmas baskets were delivered to needy families in Columbia County from donations to Christian Service Center.

During the past two weeks, scores of silent donors have tossed change and bills into The Salvation Army kettles, plucked names from Christmas wish trees and given to the community through their churches and other places of worship.

So this is Christmas in Columbia County.

How blessed we are.
