One hundred and fifty-six blankets were collected from donors who used them as tickets to attend Blank-Fest on Saturday at the Marion Street Cafe’ in downtown Lake City.
“It was a blast” said Faron Davis, one of the volunteers. “Everyone had a great time. The bands were outstanding. The acoustics were awesome.”
Jami Kurtz, event organizer, agreed that it was a success.
“I think it went great,” Kurtz said. “There were four or five different kinds of music.”
She plans to hold the event next year. It was the first time in Florida for the Blank-Fest Benefit Concert. Blank-Fest has been going on for more than a decade in other states, Kurtz said. The blankets are distributed to the homeless.
Now that the blankets have been collected, they are going to be distributed through several methods. First, United Way of Suwannee Valley is going to give away a number of them, Kurtz said.
United Way can add them to bags that its volunteers give to homeless people during the annual Point In Time census. The PIT counts homeless people in Columbia County during a 24-hour period.
Another method for getting these blankets to people who need them, Kurtz said, is for them to drop by the cafe’ at 279 N. Marion Ave. When a person wants a blanket, they just need to come in and ask, she said.
