Some veterans in the Robert H. Jenkins Jr. Domiciliary at the VA Medical Center in Lake City and residents of the Cabins in the Woods facility for homeless veterans in Lake City are getting socks for Christmas.

Last year, the Columbia County Retired Educators Association collected 350 pairs of socks and this year the tally was 222 pairs of socks, according to Will J. Brown and Corine Lofton, the CCREA members who delivered them.

There are more than 60 members of the CCREA. Last year, District President Thelma Moseley of Gainesville suggested that Dist. 4 collect socks for the veterans, Lofton said.

Although no person from the VA Medical Center or domiciliary responded to telephone calls Monday morning or afternoon, Dolly Rodriguez, health services manager of the Cabins in the Woods, said the veterans there appreciate any help they receive.

“This came at a good time for us,” Rodriguez said. “We’re giving out Christmas gifts today and some of the guys will be getting these.”

Donations of toiletries, sheets, towels, washcloths and blankets are always helpful at the Cabins in the Woods, she said. The number for that office is (386) 754-9926.
