From staff reports
Columbia High’s girls soccer team traveled to Santa Fe and defeated the Lady Raiders 4-1 on Friday.
The win marked only the fourth time the Lady Raiders have been
defeated this season.
Shelby Widergren had one of her best games of the season scoring four goals for the Lady Tigers.
Widergren had three goals in the first half before scoring the second half’s opening goal.
The Lady Raiders were able to get on the
scoreboard in the 75th minute when Lyndsay Rivas scored on an unassisted goal.
“We hustled and showed 100 percent commitment,” said coach Keith McLoughin. “We had the desire, and that was the difference.”
The win avenged a 7-0 loss to the Lady Raiders in the first game of the season.
With the win the Lady Tigers improve to 5-5-1 on the season. Santa Fe falls to 13-4-1 on the year.
Tigers basketball
The Columbia High Tigers were defeated 72-45 on Friday by Raines High in Jacksonville. The Tigers played strong through the first two quarters, but Raines pulled away in the second half on the way to the win.
Columbia trailed in all four quarters, but was down only 14 at half before scoring four in the third quarter to help Raines pull away.
Julio Viens had 13 points in the game to lead the Tigers.
Ian Benjamin scored nine in the loss.
Jerry Thomas scored eight points
Ricky Jernigan added seven points.
“It was a frustrating night. Raines was very athletic with size,” coach Trey Hosford said. “Raines defense just took us out of what we were trying to do. We didn’t take care of the ball, and you can’t beat a team like Raines when you do that. We knew it was going to be a challenge, but a couple of us just didn’t show up.”
One player that did stand out in the loss was Dekota Smith, who had five blocks.
“Smith was a bright spot,” Hosford said.
“He was a force on defense.”
The Tigers close out their pre-holiday schedule tonight at 7:30 in
Baker County.
Lady Indians soccer
Fort White traveled to Lafayette and defeated the Lafayette High Hornets
6-0 on Friday.
The Lady Indians victory improved their season record to 8-7-2.
Rebecca Onorati scored three goals and picked up an assist in the game.
Amanda Weddle had one goal. Casey Dubose had a goal and an assist.
Christine Weddle had one of her best games of the season scoring one goal.
Shelby Barton added the other assist.
“We finished off the year with a win,” coach Perry Sauls said. “It will give us a good feeling going into the break.”
The Lady Indians will play a make-up game against Williston on Jan. 6. for their first game after the holiday break.
“Once again, the defense just played lights out,” Sauls said.
“Our keeper only had to make one save.
The Lady Indians have a (3-1-1) district mark heading into the holidays, which sets them up for a run at the playoffs again this year.
Indians soccer
The Fort White Indians lost to Lafayette in a close 3-2 game on Friday at Arrowhead Stadium. It was the Indians final game before the holiday break.
Trevor Stout scored the Indians first goal
unassisted.
Matt Collins was
assisted by Chad Evans on the Indians’ second goal to tie things up.
Lafayette took the lead late to edge out the Indians 3-2.
“Over the last couple of games, we’ve started to play better. We have had a better work ethic,” coach Ashley Griseck said. “Tonight, we just stayed in there. We had a couple of unlucky calls, but we can’t help that. Still, we’re coming together nicely as a team, and playing better together.”
