Two residents of western Florida died on Interstate 75 near Lake City Thursday morning when their SUV’s tire blew and caused the vehicle to overturn several times, according to reports.

Doris J. Woods, 56, of Quincy, and Bennie L. Woods, 81, of Tallahassee, died from injuries suffered during the rollover crash. Passengers Annette S. Rotch, 29, Thomas H. Lloyd, 3, and Stormey R. Lloyd,

nine-months, all of Quincy, also suffered injuries in the crash, with Thomas Lloyd suffering the most severe. He was being treated at Shands at the University of Florida, where he was listed in serious condition, officials said.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

According to Florida Highway Patrol reports, Doris Woods was driving a 1993 Ford Explorer northbound on I-75 at approximately 11:30 a.m. For unknown reasons, the left rear tire separated and caused Woods to lose control of the vehicle around the 430 mile-marker.

The Explorer traveled off the roadway and onto the paved shoulder. When Woods tried to steer the vehicle back onto the roadway, the SUV began to rotate and overturned into the outside northbound lane. It rolled multiple times and came to final rest upright on the northbound, grassy shoulder.

Doris Woods and Thomas Lloyd both were ejected from the vehicle during the crash. Reports indicate that Woods was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, but Lloyd was wearing one. However, it was unclear if the child was properly restrained

in a safety seat.

Traffic was delayed on the interstate for approximately 15 minutes while the ShandsCair helicopter landed on the three-lane northbound highway to transport patients to Gainesville. At the same time emergency crews worked to clear the scene.

n This is the second fatal wreck on Columbia County’s busy interstate systems in two days. On Wednesday, Jacksonville resident Leonard G. Wright died on Interstate 10 when his vehicle swerved off of the roadway and into a tree, according to FHP.

Reports state that Wright, 28, was traveling eastbound on I-10, near the overpass at Gum Swamp Road, at approximately 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. According to reports and witness statements, Wright was driving erratically and at a high rate of speed and began to drift from his lane to another occupied by other traveling motorists. He veered back into his lane without striking another motorist and lost control of his 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier. The car left the roadway and struck a tree.

These deaths bring Columbia County’s traffic-related fatalities to 37 for 2008, compared to 28 in 2007.
