The Lake City Social Security Administration District Office opens at 9 a.m. today in its new location at 1348 SW Bascom Norris Drive and Sisters Welcome Road.

“This is a larger, more comfortable place for the people to get their services, and the larger area will allow us to provide more services,” District Manager Kay Louder said, noting that in the near future computers will be placed in the lobby to allow clients access to the SSA Web site.

“It will allow them to take care of some business online without having to see a representative,” she said.

Louder said that the new, larger office also gives the agency space to grow.

“If we can get the employees we need — as the community grows — then we can guarantee shorter waits,” Louder said.

The new office now has three intake windows plus multiple windows where client’s can talk with representatives.

“Now a person won’t have to come in the back necessarily to see a representative,” Louder said. “We can serve more than one person now.”

The Lake City District office currently serves about 31,000 people yearly from Suwannee, Columbia, Union, Hamilton and Lafayette counties, according to Louder.

" If the SS administration is supposedly downsizing due to most services now available over the internet then why was a new building built for them? I do understand the other one they were in was quite old, but in today's economy the questions is why? "

" I do not work for the SSA and I know it's not the best time for the SSA to have relocated into a new building during the economic downturn; however, in their defense, they have been working on the permitting and building process for about a year and a half. So this isn't something they just decided to build a few months ago. This has been in works for a LONG time.

I hope that eases your mind a little bit. "

" 'concerned taxpayer' should be aware that everyone does not have a computer or access to the internet, and if they do, then they still might prefer to have face to face contact with the representative who will be effecting their finances and their future lifestyle. "

" I think it is alright to move to a bigger facility but the issue is why does the system deny so many people what they so deserve? They give to thyselves first then maybe the common citizen if they feel like it. Hopefully they can get more organized and are ADA acceseable for the disabled. "
