Columbia’s boys soccer team didn’t knock Vanguard High from the unbeaten ranks, but the Tigers did put a dent in the Knights’ record.

Columbia and Vanguard played to a 2-2 district tie in Ocala on Wednesday.

Jorge Carrillo got the Tigers on the board first with a goal off a rebound shot by Geoff Beardsley.

Vanguard tied it in the closing minutes of the first half and went ahead with a goal midway through the second half. Matt Rodriguez and Justin Ciambella scored for the Knights (9-0-2).

In the last 10 minutes, Jordan Lehman tied it off a throw-in from Michael Smith.

“They gave a really good effort again,” coach Trevor Tyler said. “We still have to finish out the halves, but they played very well. We had a few chances at the end and almost scored. It was a very good game.”

Columbia (4-2-2, 0-1-1) plays at Leesburg High at 7:30 p.m. today.

The Fort White Indians ended a long week with a loss to the Suwannee Bulldogs on the road.

Suwannee was able to keep the soccer ball in Indian’s territory

throughout the course of the game on the way to an 8-0 victory.

Though the score won’t reflect it, coach Ashley Griseck feels her team is slowly coming together.

“As a team we play much better together tonight, even though the score won’t show that,” Griseck said

following the game.

Matt Waddington continued to be a bright spot for the Indians through the struggles according to Griseck as he kept the Indians in the game early.

“Matt kept us in there as long as he could,” Griseck said, “but he couldn’t hold us forever. It’s been a long week, but we’ll start to try to turn it around next week.”

The Indians will return home next week looking to right the ship, and gather some momentum before the Christmas break.

Interlachen comes into Arrowhead Stadium on Wednesday at 6 p.m. as part of back-to-back home games for Fort White.

Fort White went on the road to take on Newberry, and fell short 56-50 on Thursday.

The Indians played much better than against P.K. Yonge on Tuesday night, but the final few minutes would effect the outcome of the game.

“We played hard tonight and the effort was there,” coach Isiah Phillips said. “They were able to cause a couple of turnovers there at the end, and that allowed them to get a couple of easy baskets. That was really the difference in the game.”

Alexis Blake led the Indians in scoring with 12 points in the game.

Thomas Barnes and Chandler Kitzman had eight and seven points, respectively.

Xavier Blake also contributed with seven points.

Jordan Dewhirst added six points to the Indians total.

Roy Blake and Dustin Stout added four points each.

“Tonight was a better overall team effort than against P.K. Yonge,” Phillips said. “We shot better, rebounded better, and fought to the very end.”

Tigers Basketball

Columbia High battled Gainesville’s Eastside to a 60-38 loss on Thursday.

“We got down early, but battled back to within four with just under a minute remaining in the half,” coach Trey Hosford said, “but two turnovers turned into two baskets and that was the turning point in the game.

Ian Benjamin led the Tigers with 12 points. Dexter Dye added ten points.

Dontae Davis and Jerry Thomas scored seven and six respectively.

Lady Tigers Basketball

The Columbia High Lady Tigers defeated Keystone Heights on Thursday 41-28 after trailing 7-1 early.

Sharmayne Edwards led with 15 points, but Moriah Harrington’s 15 rebounds were just as instrumental in the victory.

Simone Williamson added seven points and eight rebounds.

DaBrea Hill had eight rebounds and four points.

“After trailing early, I thought the game might get out of hand,” coach Horace Jefferson said, “but I called time out to slow it down, and we cruised from there.”
