The Lake City Social Security Administration Office is moving after 32 years in its current location.

Office staff on Friday will begin the task of preparing to move three decades of records from its cramped quarters into its new 9,600-square-foot location at 1348 SW Bascom Norris Drive and Sisters Welcome Road.

Though the office will maintain normal business hours on Friday, the services it offers will be severely limited because of the move, said District Manager Kay Louder.

“We’ve outgrown that building,” said Cliff Copeland, SSA regional public affairs office.

Copeland said that he was working at the office when it first opened in late 1976.

“I was transferred from the Gainesville office to Lake City in 1976,” Copeland said. “It was just a few months later that we moved into the Main Boulevard office from a U.S. 90 storefront.”

The SSA office currently serves about 31,000 people yearly, but once in the new office that number could easily double, according to Louder.

The current facility has two customer service windows but the new office will have about a dozen customer service windows, she said.

The Lake City district office serves residents in Suwannee, Columbia, Union, Hamilton and Lafayette counties.

The new office is expected to be open by Dec. 9, Louder said.
