Columbia High’s girls basketball team put a scare in defending District 4-5A champion Leesburg, falling to the Yellow Jackets, 63-62, in the season-opener at home on Friday.
“I was very proud of the girls,” coach Horace Jefferson said. “If we can build on this, there are only good things to come.”
Sharmayne Edwards fired in 21 points for the Lady Tigers and DaBrea Hill was close behind with 18. Freshman Katrina Goodbread scored 14 points.
Moriah Harrington added four points, with three from Simone Williamson and two from Shaniqua Henry.
Columbia hosts Lake Weir High at 3 p.m. today in another district game.

Columbia’s boys soccer team beat Bay High, 2-0, on Friday at the Capital Soccer Invitational in Tallahassee.
Michael Jordan scored the first goal for Columbia with an assist by Geoff Beardsley. Beardsley added his own goal off an assist by Brad Carpenter.
Columbia (2-0-1) gets a look at District 4-5A foe Gainesville High in a match at 11 a.m. today at Meadows Soccer Complex. The Tigers then play St. Johns Country Day at
3 p.m. at Maclay High.

Columbia’s boys basketball team lost to Buchholz High, 62-49, in a preseason game played at Gainesville High on Friday.
The Tigers trailed by two points, 27-25, at the half, but the Bobcats rolled with a 19-2 third quarter.
“We scored 22 points in the fourth quarter, but we are not good enough to take quarters off,” coach Trey Hosford said.
Dont’ae Davis led CHS with 17 points and Julio Viens also hit double figures with 12.
Also scoring for the Tigers were Ian Benjamin, 7, Daron Huff, 6, Jerry Thomas, 4, Dexter Dye, 2, and Dakota Smith, 1.
Columbia opens the regular season at Union County High at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
