PENSACOLA — After finishing the regular

season at 9-1, the Fort White Indians fell, 35-7, in the opening round of the 2A playoffs to the Pensacola Catholic Crusaders.

Though the weather was cold, the Crusaders came out hot behind the running of Marquis Sumler. Sumler led the Crusaders down the field on 58 rushing yards on the first possession. Shaun White capped off the drive with a quarterback sneak to put the Crusaders up 7-0.

The Indians faced a fourth-and-2 on their opening drive, but Xavier Blake was stopped short giving it back to the Crusaders.

The Crusaders scored again with 4:10 remaining in the second quarter when La’Jerrold White ran it in from 18 yards out.

Fort White put their only points of the night on the board during their next drive. Alex Gilmer hit Jordan Dewhirst for a

27-yard gain and Blake finished the drive off with a three-yard touchdown run.

The half ended with the Indians down 13-7.

Sumler added a touchdown run from 11 yards out and the Crusaders led 21-7.

After a punt the Crusaders were on the move again. This time it was Evin Smith on an eight-yard reception, putting Pensacola Catholic on top 28-7.

The next drive iced the game as the Indians moved the ball to midfield, with Levi Hatcher hauling in a pass from Gilmer of 30 yards. Three plays later the Crusaders’ Jonathan Melton picked off a Gilmer pass, and ran it back 54 yards for the game’s final score, 35-7.

Sumler rushed for 163 yards on 24 carries for the Crusaders.

Fort White’s Xavier Blake ran 27 times for 123 yards and a touchdown.
