FORT WHITE — After a 36-34 victory against Pensacola Catholic in last year’s playoff game, the Fort White Indians look to repeat their performance in order to advance to the regional finals.
Fort White will head to Pensacola on Thursday, where they intend to practice before the two teams meet in at 8:30 p.m. local time, Friday in Pensacola.
The Crusaders of Pensacola will be led by Shaun White, a dual-threat quarterback, who has thrown for more than 1,200 yards this season. White has completed 57 percent of his passes for 11 touchdowns and only three interceptions.
“They can throw it, and they’ll run it well from the spread,” said coach Demetric Jackson of the Indians. “They’re well coached, and don’t make a lot of mistakes.”
Taking the bulk of the carries for the Crusaders will be Marcus Sumter, who’s accumulated 14 touchdowns this season. The Crusaders are led by Alex Bast at receiver who has hauled in 517 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.
Defensively, the Crusaders base out of a 4-3, but the Indians have some familiarity running against Pensacola Catholic’s defense.
“It gives us a little familiarity knowing the team,” Jackson said. “We know the surroundings. We know the field, and we hope that it gives us a sense of confidence.”
One condition that will definitely play a factor in Friday’s game is the weather, which is expected to be in the 50s around kickoff, and likely to get colder as the game progresses.
“We haven’t played in the cold weather, but we know they haven’t played in it either,” Jackson said. “They haven’t played in about three weeks, but once they hit the field and the adrenaline gets flowing that stuff will be out the door. We’d like to play physical, and go hard to the ball. If we do that, we should be fine.”
