Indians go for ninth win

FORT WHITE — For the first time in school history the Fort White Indians can reach nine wins after a remarkable regular season that has already seen the Indians reach the 2A playoffs for the second straight season.

Some might think the Indians would take it easy the last week of the season with a playoff spot already locked up, but coach Demetric Jackson’s players haven’t taken a day off.

“The guys came in this week with a workman attitude,” Jackson said. “They’re out there practicing like it’s the middle of the season.”

Some may have thought this would be a chance to rest some of the starters with the matchup against Pensacola Catholic already set for next Friday night in the first round of the playoffs, but sending out the seniors undefeated in the paddle game is motivation enough to keep the team focused.

“We didn’t want to go in with the philosophy that we’re going to rest,” Jackson said. “We want to go out with the mindset to win. The game itself will dictate if any of the younger guys get a chance to play.”

Going up to play a 4A school in the Santa Fe Raiders could help the Indians as they prepare for the Crusaders next week.

“We don’t want to go in thinking that we can dominate a 4A team with their talent,” Jackson said. “We want to go in, and be sound.”

Coaching against former University of Florida roommate Shea Showers may add a little flare to the rivalry, but don’t look for Jackson to dwell on the matchup for too long.

“It’s good for preparation, but once kickoff starts, it’s not going to dictate how the teams play,” Jackson said.

The Indians are more concerned with keeping quarterback Frank Sneed, and the Raiders’ offense in check.

“Snead has a great arm,” Jackson said. “He will lead one of the only balanced teams that we’ve played all season. He can also run well, and they’re running backs can line up at receiver and go get it.”

If the Indians are able to win it will mark the first time in school history that Fort White has reached the nine win mark, and a win in the playoffs as well will lead the Indians to the ten win plateau.

“It’s a chance to finish, and do something that we’ve never done before,” Jackson said. “We went 8-2 one season, but didn’t make the playoffs. People always want to be around winners. The JV team went 5-2 as well, and we’re hoping that it will help some of the kids zoned with us to come back and play. Everyone wants to be around people that are successful.”

" I'm sad to see regular season come to an end. It's been a GREAT season and we are all VERY proud of Coach Jackson, all the other coaches that gave up their time and most of all the hard working, never giving up boys that make up the team. "
