A three-quarter mile motocross track is up and running.
The track, already operating each Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. until dark in Lake City, has a scheduled grand-opening weekend Nov. 22 and 23. Lake City Motocross Track is on U.S. Highway 441 near Interstate-10 and the Huddle House.
Exhibition races are scheduled for the grand opening on Nov. 22. Gates open at 6:30 a.m. with race registration at 7:30 a.m.
Races are set to start at 10 a.m. and recreational vehicle parking is available — first come, first serve, , said Holly McGlashan, director of marketing. Gates open at 3 p.m. Friday for RV parking.
There will be live bands and Phish Heads is providing concessions, McGlashan said.
On Nov. 23, Florida Vintage Motocross will be at the track, she said.
The fee is $20 to use the track all day for practice, McGlashan said, but it’s free to watch. She expects to have a three-race series in early December by coordinating with AmpXtreme of Madison.
The dirt bike racing, she said, all takes place in a family atmosphere. No
alcohol is served. All safety equipment must be worn to ride on the track, McGlashan said.
Lake City agreed to grant the developer, Sam Oosterhoudt, a one-year reprieve from being forced to build permanent bathrooms facilities.
Normally, new developments must connect with the city sewer system. Portable, temporary bathrooms, however, will be pumped out by licensed contractors.
The reprieve fits in with the scheduled time frame of the city track.
The plan for the future does not show the property remaining as a motocross facility, according to GTC Design Group Project Manager Chad Williams.
“In fact,” Williams noted in an Oct. 13 letter to City Manager Scott Reynolds, “Mr. Oosterhoudt is currently permitting a much larger motocross in northern Columbia County.”
That larger facility is projected to be completed in the unincorporated part of the county in 12 months. When it opens, Williams said, Oosterhoudt will close the city track and use only the county track.
