The Columbia Tigers played the Suwannee Bulldogs to a 2-2 tie in front of a home crowd on Tuesday night.

After falling behind on two kicks from Marshall Boggus early in the game, Columbia was playing catch up all night.

Geoff Beardsley collided with a Suwannee defender early in the second half causing a laceration on his head, which caused him to miss significant playing time in the second half.

Once Beardsley returned to the game, he made his mark by bringing the Tigers back.

Beardsley got an assist when Jorge Carpenter scored the Tigers first point at 12:16 remaining in the second half.

The second score came when Beardsley had a goal with under four to play in the contest.

The Tigers had 21 shots on goal to the four shots on goal for the Bulldogs.

“We came out sluggish,” coach Trevor Tyler said following the game. “We played well, and so did they. We put ourselves in a hole, and were fighting back for the last eighteen minutes. We just have to keep on getting better.”

Tyler was very impressed with the play of Beardsley on the night as the Junior led the Tigers back to the tie.

“He’s a stellar player,” Tyler said. “What else can you say? He gets a laceration on his head, and then comes back with a goal and an assist. He’s just a stellar player.”

Lady Tigers soccer

Columbia’s girls soccer team notched its first win of the season, a 5-2 decision over Vanguard High in Ocala on Monday.

Shelby Widergren scored three goals for Columbia and Christine Bonilla and Erika Hall each scored one.

“It was important to have that first win to settle everybody down a little bit,” coach Keith McLoughlan said.

“We got some confidence and that is always good. I definitely feel we are improving each game. The girls are showing more discipline and more thought on the field.”

Columbia’s junior varsity won 1-0 on a late goal by Christy Everett.

The JV previously had a loss and tie in games against Forest High and Gainesville High.

Columbia (1-3-0, 1-2-0) continues District 4-5A play at Eastside High at 7:30 p.m. today.

The JV game begins at 5:30 p.m.
