FORT WHITE — On homecoming night the Fort White Indians had more things on their minds than who would be crowned homecoming queen.
The Indians jumped on the Taylor County Bulldogs, and came away with the 49-7 homecoming win.
Xavier Blake dominated the night with 30 attempts for 184 yards and four rushing touchdowns, while quarterback Alex Gilmer threw for 193 yards and three touchdowns.
“He’s a quiet assassin,” Coach Demetric Jackson said of Blake. “He doesn’t say a lot, and gives you the same look whether you’re yelling at him or cheering him on. He’s put in the work since day one though, and he’s our horse.”
Blake paced the first drive of 78 yards, capping it off with a five yard touchdown carry.
Jarquis Ellis took the following kickoff 86 yards for the Bulldogs, and it looked like there would be a game on the Indians’ hands when Taylor scored on the following play.
The Indians responded, as Blake added his second touchdown on the next drive. Jordan Dewhirst and Alexis Blake put the Indians in scoring position.
Dylan Mudd recovered a fumble on the Bulldogs next drive giving the Indians another chance to score.
Montre Cray broke a 23 yard run setting up Blake’s third rushing touchdown of the first half.
It was fumble-itis for the Bulldogs as the next drive resulted in Chris Griffith jarring the ball loose, and that allowed Desha Cray to scoop up the fumble giving the Indians the ball back at the Bulldogs’ 36 yard line.
This time Blake scored through the air as Gilmer hit him on a 36 yard pass to put the Indians up 28-7 with 6:58 remaining in the second quarter.
Jordan Dewhirst got into the scoring action on the Indians’ next drive as he took a Gilmer pass 22 yards for the touchdown reception.
The Bulldogs final drive of the first half was cut short after Levi Hatcher picked up a sack for a 12 yard loss, and the Indians led 35-7.
The second half began with the Indians continuing to create turnovers as A.J. Parnell scooped up the loose ball, and it allowed Xavier Blake to score from 31 yards on the following drive.
“My line came out and they blocked for me real good all night,” Blake said. “I told them before we even got to the fieldhouse that if they did they’re job to sit back, and I was going to do my thing. They did their job, and it allowed us to come out with a win.”
The Indians were cruising 42-7 as the fumble party continued. Roy Blake picked up a Bulldog fumble, and the Indians had a running clock in their advantage.
The final score came from Bo Kirby when Gilmer hit him from four yards out.
Joseph Johnson added his seventh extra point of the evening, and the running clock ran out before the Bulldogs had another chance at the ball, giving the Indians a 49-7 victory.
The Indians will travel to Santa Fe next week to take on the Raiders before traveling to Pensacola Catholic to take on the Crusaders in the first round of the playoffs.
“Next week is still a big game regardless of the record,” Jackson said. “We don’t want to lose momentum, and it’s still a big rival.”
