The Lake City Police Department has launched an investigation into a Sunday morning shoot-out where three men with guns allegedly fired shots at a male downtown homeowner who was armed with an AK-47 assault rifle, police reports say.
Lake City Police Department Lt. Joe Moody said authorities have forwarded arrest affidavits to the state attorney’s office and hope to make arrests in the case in the near future.
The initial incident occurred 3:50 a.m. Sunday at 210 NW Long Street, The Squeeze In barbecue shop, where a disagreement occurred.
“It started out that it was just an argument or possible fight,” Moody said, noting that when the officers get there they learned one of the subjects pulled an AK-47 assault rifle and threatened to use it. “No shots were fired.”
Later that morning officers where dispatched to a Congress Street address where the property owner told officers people from three cars fired shots at him while he was standing in his yard.
“He said while he was standing in his yard, a couple of cars came up, parked around the corner from him, turned their lights out and fired a couple of shots at him,” Moody said. “He got the same AK-47 out of his trunk and returned fire. I guess it was in self-defense, but he put the weapon up before we got there.”
Authorities have not been able to determine how many gunshots were fired during the exchange, but said no one was struck on injured.
“An officer was staged about four blocks away and he heard three shots fired,” Moody said.
Though no one was injured, the property owner’s vehicle was struck in the passenger door as well as shot in a front and rear tire.
“No arrests have been made, but we did confiscate the (AK-47) rifle,” Moody said. He said an affidavit was sent to the state attorney’s office and the property owner could face charges for discharging a firearm in the city. “We have the gun in safe keeping. It’s not logged in as evidence yet. That will be based on what the state attorney says, but in the meantime we have some suspect’s names that we’re looking into.”
Moody said the department is continuing its investigation looking for the other alleged shooters.
“We’re going to let the state attorney’s office start looking at it,” he said detailing the investigation paperwork. “That way they can be kept abreast of what’s going on also.”

Although, since this guy had an ak47, my guess is that he probably has a backup gun as well.
If he is not breaking the law, he has every right to defend himself with a firearm, especially on his own property. "
