Columbia High
bowling is the defending champion in District 2, but it is a new set of Lady Tigers that will hit the lanes on Monday.
The District 2 tournament is 8 a.m., Monday, at AMF Galaxy East Lanes in Ocala.
“Vanguard and Forest are strong, traditionally, and they returned a lot,” CHS head coach Brian Saunders said. “We are starting over.”
None of the six members of last year’s team are back for Columbia, which also won district in 2005.
Alyssa Phillips leads the 2008 Lady Tigers with a season average of 130.8.
Jordan Williams (119.6 season average), Michelle Carroll (113), Holly Crumpton (108.8) and Symone Carter (106.8) round out the top five.
Janine Lopez (105.2), Tiana Wright (100.1) and Krystal Lambert (97.3) also are members of the
district tournament
contingent.
Columbia has bowled all season against Fort White High and Suwannee High, both of which are in District 2.
Belleview, Lake Weir, North Marion and West Port high schools complete the competition.
In the morning qualifying, five girls from each team bowl three games and the top four teams using total pin count advance to the afternoon championship round.
The championship uses the Baker format, where five girls from the seeded teams bowl two frames each — 1 and 6, 2 and 7, 3 and 8, etc. It is double elimination.
The top two teams advance to state, as well as the top three individual bowlers not on one of the advancing teams.
“If we make it to the afternoon and the Baker format, we have a shot,” Saunders said.
“The last couple of years I did not like it, because we were a better team, but you can catch more breaks with the Baker.”
The state championship is Nov. 11-12 at Boardwalk Bowl in Orlando.
