Lake City Mayor Stephen Witt declared October as “Head Start Awareness Month” in Lake City.
He recently issued the proclamation at Suwannee Valley 4Cs, the local Head Start headquarters.
President Lyndon B. Johnson began an eight-week summer program named “Project Head Start” in 1965 to meet the emotional, social, health, nutritional and
psychological needs of young children of low-income families.
More than 25 million children and their families have been helped through the program in the United States since then, Suwannee Valley 4Cs Director of Programs Jeannie Brown said.
In Columbia, Hamilton, Lafayette and Suwannee counties, 430 children from low-income families and who are 5 and younger, Brown said, currently receive comprehensive child development services in the areas of education, medical, dental, mental health, nutrition and parent involvement from Suwannee Valley 4Cs.
Children with a diagnosed disability, she said, regardless of family income, and children with teenage parents receive priority for placement. The agency also partners with the local Early Learning Coalition of Florida’s Gateway to provide VPK services to eligible 4-year-old Head Start children.
Suwannee Valley 4Cs has seven Head Start and three Early Head Start centers located in Lake City, Fort White, Branford, Mayo, Live Oak, Jasper and Jennings. For more information about the Suwannee Valley 4Cs Head Start and Early Head Start Programs, please call (386) 754-2222.
