United States Rep. Ander Crenshaw (Fla.-4) used several stops in Lake City on Thursday to give his views on the country’s recent financial upheavel.

The Florida Republican began his visit with a speaking engagement at the Rotary Club of Lake City.

“I talked about what’s going on in Washington and about some of the economic crises and credit crunches that are really impacting our country,” Crenshaw said. “I’m also here to look at the community college and then I’m going by the VA clinic, a place that is very important to this community.

“This year there is a lot more money in the veterans budget, the new emergency room is going to be there and there is more money for mental health, so I get to see what’s going on there,” Crenshaw said.

Lake City Community College received a $95,305 grant with Crenshaw’s help and he stopped by the college for an update on how the money was being

spent for a promising pilot program that will align math programs between high schools and public colleges.

Crenshaw was also given a demonstration of the college’s unique online water/wastewater operator pre-licensure courses from Dr. John Rowe and Tim Atkinson, executive director workforce and economic development.

Crenshaw also visited the college’s interactive video distance learning lab, where by the magic of interactive video, he was interviewed by the educators sitting in a classroom in Gilchrist county visible on a giant video display.

The college also made known its desire to get Title III funding so that it can expand its support of high school students who arrive ill-prepared for college and are in need of remedial math and English classes.

“We want to be able to help more students get to the next level,” said Laurel Semmes, LCCC director of grants. “It would fund a lot of support systems such as a new learning lab and employees who could help the students implement their classroom material.”

Last on the list for Crenshaw was a visit to the college’s patient simulator lab, where student nurses learn how to treat simulated patients who can talk and move, but mostly complain of symptoms.

“I think the nursing program is obviously very important,” Crenshaw said. “Especially considering the shortage of nurses that we have in our country.”

Crenshaw said that he was impressed with the online water/wastewater operator pre-licensure courses and said that “they should be a model for the whole country.”

“It’s a vocation that I think is in need of people, and to hear that it has been going on for 10 years and is now being taught online is exciting,” Crenshaw said.

“Finally, the math program will go a long way toward equipping people to go to college or prepare them to get into the workforce. Students need to come out of high school better equipped for college.”

" It is a shame that Crenshaw voted in favor of the $700 billion bank bailout plan. That was an extremely poor use of tax payer dollars when there were much cheaper alternative plans available. "

" Crenshaw said " Blah blah blah" he is lyiong politician that is full of crap. Personally I hate all of them. I wonder how much money he's lost in his retirement. While I have lost everything almost. I hate them all. Just look at that fake smile enough to make me want to vomit. "
