More than 30 agencies participated Saturday in the 2008 Columbia County Public Safety Expo at the Columbia County Fairgrounds, Columbia County Emergency Management Specialist Shayne Morgan said.

Emergency response vehicles were displayed along the midway, and informational booths inside of the fairgrounds entertainment building were located in other places where the public learned about the people and operations responsible for saving lives and property.

Among the state agencies, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Division of Forestry brought Smokey Bear to visit with children and adults. Like many of the other organizations, forestry brought several items to hand out — coloring books, wrist bands, rulers, pins, stickers, pamphlets and more.

The Florida Department of Transportation brought a 1997 Peterbilt semi-tractor trailer to help teach people about blind spots around semi-trucks. Sgt. Bryant Gay of Tallahassee is the driver.

The truck, which was seized from a methamphetamine user, is also utilized to transport emergency relief supplies, Gay said. It made four trips to Biloxi following Hurricane Katrina.

All of the local law enforcement and firefighter groups, including some TIMCO Fire Department personnel, were on hand to teach interested visitors about their agencies and equipment. Columbia County Fire Department Auxiliary was among

the vendors of hot dogs, hamburgers, soft drinks and more.

The “spare for the day” Advance Life Support ambulance was open for visitors to inspect. Rusty Noah, Columbia County Emergency Director, said there were four units on the road, as usual on any given Saturday. The spare was completely ready to run, he added, if it was needed as a replacement.

Columbia County Emergency Management Director Ronnie McCardle and Emergency Management Specialist Morgan brought the event to fruition, with help from other municipal, county and state agencies.
