CAMPAIGN FINANCE: Juggling money part of the job
Candidates spend, collect ahead of general election.

The November general election is quickly approaching and local candidates who made their way to the general election for runoff races continue to raise and spend campaign contributions.
According to information from the Columbia County Supervisor of Elections office, candidates had to file their campaign financial reports last Friday for the contribution period from Aug. 22 to Sept. 12. The next campaign finance report will be due by 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3.
During the November general election, there will be three election races for local positions in the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office race and the County Commission District 3 and District 5 races.
County sheriff
In the sheriff’s office race, challenger Mark A. Hunter leads incumbent Bill Gootee in finance contributions and expenditures.
Hunter raised a total of $62,995 leading up to last week’s accounting period. During the primary period he raised $59,345.
During the recording period after the primary he raised $3,650.
Hunter’s largest contributions during the recording period were $500 checks from five businesses and one local citizen.
Hunter has spent a total of $60,719. During the primary period he spent $55,531, while during the latest reporting period, Hunter spent $5,187. His largest expenditure was $1,104 for advertising.
Gootee’s campaign contributions total $58,225. During the primary election reporting period he raised $46,475.
During the latest reporting period Gootee raised $11,750 in contributions. His largest contribution was a $10,000 loan to himself.
Gootee’s total campaign expenditures are listed as $48,510. He spent $45,088 during the primary period and spent $3,421 during the reporting period. His
largest expenditure to date was $3,250 for campaign material.
County Commission Dist. 3
In the County Commission District 3 race where J.L. Dupree is facing David Rountree in a runoff, Dupree has emerged as the leading campaign fundraiser.
Dupree’s campaign contributions total $15,950. He raised $14,650 during the primary period and $1,300 during the latest recording period. His largest contribution during the period was a $1,000 loan to himself.
Dupree’s campaign expenditures total $15,685, including $14,650 spent during the primary period. During the latest reporting period he spent $1,349. His largest expenditure was $749 for advertising.
Rountree’s campaign contributions total $8,850. Rountree raised $7,550 during the primary period and $1,300 during the latest recording period.
His largest contributions were two, $500 checks from supporters.
Rountree’s campaign expenditures total $5,938, including $5,349 spent
during the primary period. During the latest reporting period he spent $588. His largest expenditure during the period was $513 for purchasing advertising signs.
County Commission Dist. 5
Scarlet Parnell Frisina and Garry Ward Sr. are competing for the Columbia County Commission District 5 seat.
Ward is the leading fundraiser in the race and has raised a total of $17,350. He raised $15,850 during the primary election period and raised $1,500 in contributions during the latest recording period. His largest contribution during the period was a $1,000 check from himself.
Ward’s expenditures total $16,813, including $15,385 spent during the primary period. He spent $1,428 during the latest recording period. His largest expenditure was $1,000 for campaign signage.
Frisina has raised a total of $13,896, including $13,646 raised during the primary period. She raised $250 during the latest recording period. Her largest contribution was a $250 check from a local business.
Frisina’s expenditures total $11,906, including $11,431 spent during the primary period. She spent $474 during the recording period. Her largest expenditure was $160 for signs.
City Council Dist. 12
The City of Lake City is also holding an election on Nov. 4 where Jake Hill and Greg Ridilla are competing for the City Council District 12 post.
Ridilla has received the most contributions leading up to the runoff election race.
Ridilla has raised a total of $8,328 since the primary. During the latest recording period he raised $50 in contributions. His largest contribution was a
$50 check from a local business owner.
Ridilla has spent a total of $8,288 since the primary. During the latest recording period, he spent $10 on an updated voters list.
Hill has received a total of $3,175 in campaign contributions since the primary. During the latest recording period, he received $500 in campaign contributions. His largest campaign contribution during the latest recording period was $500 check from an attorney.
Hill has spent a total of $2,377 for campaign expenditures. During the latest recording period, he spent $639. His largest expenditure was $299 for yard campaign signs.
