FORT WHITE — When Fort White High School drama teacher Harry Joiner wanted to give his students a different look at theater — a real-life, hands-on approach toward the art — he turned to those with an experienced hand.

Teaming with Lake City’s own Alligator Community Theater group, Fort White High School students are getting an approach that textbooks do not offer. Students auditioned Monday night for parts in an upcoming performance, at October’s Finally Friday, which will see FWHS students and ACT actors take part in a performance including a half-dozen popular fairy tales.

This is the second year of the drama class under the direction of Joiner. However, this is the first year in which students were able to choose to place drama on their class schedule and he said students are much more involved in the intricacies of the class. Comprised of mostly underclassmen, the drama class has a variety of different personalities, which surprisingly, mesh well together in this setting, he said.

A number of students — including a handful not taking the drama course — were in attendance Monday to audition for parts for the upcoming performances. ACT director and co-founder Frank Hubert led the students in a number of warm-up activities before breaking out the scripts and doing sample readings.

Having worked with the ACT in April to celebrate the birthday of William Shakespeare, Joiner said he had met several times with the group to discuss upcoming performances. He said it was through these conversations that the ACT expressed an interest in forming a youth arm of the group and wanted to test it at FWHS.

Joiner said he couldn’t say no.

“This provides an avenue I normally wouldn’t have to get my kids out in public to act,” Joiner said.

Formed a little more than a year ago, the ACT was responsible for the Ghost Walk during last year’s October Finally Friday event. Hubert said the group again wanted to do something for Halloween, but wanted to go a different route than the typical ghost story fare.

“Halloween is primarily for kids, and we thought nursery rhymes are primarily for kids,” Hubert said. “This will give them something to do and we’ll be able to entertain them for the evening.”

The group plans to perform six short plays during their Oct. 31 performance — “Who Stole the Tarts,” “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Tea Party,” “Hansel and Gretel,” “Story of Stone Soup,” and “Rumpelstiltskin.”

Preparations also are under way for next April’s celebration of Shakespeare’s birth, which will consist of a performance of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” performed by the students at the high school.
