Just as another Ste-Marie comes on the Columbia High golf scene, Aunt Nadia was honored by her college alma mater.

Nadia Ste-Marie was inducted into the Florida State University Athletics Hall of Fame in a ceremony at the University Center Club on Sept. 5.

The 30th Annual Hall of Fame Banquet was part of Varsity Weekend celebrations at the school in Tallahassee.

“I was very excited when they told me,” Ste-Marie said. “I got the letter in May, but it didn’t seem real until the actual ceremony. I am definitely proud to be part of the hall of fame.”

Fellow 2008 inductees were Clifton Abraham (football), Doug Edwards (basketball), John Poston (track and field), Jan Sikes (softball), Bud Teagle (baseball) and Claude Thigpen (coaches and administration). Andy Haggard received the Moore-Stone Award for service to the university.

Ste-Marie graduated from Columbia High in 1985 and was a member of the CHS boys golf team as a junior and senior.

Girls golf would not come along until 10 years later and now her niece, Darian, is a member of the Lady Tigers.

After spending her first two years at the University of Hawaii, Ste-Marie transferred to Florida State. She won the Metro Conference championship in 1988, plus two other tournaments, and was named first-team All-American by the National Golf Coaches Association.

“We got a different coach at Hawaii my second year; he did not have the same vision, and three of us left,” Ste-Marie said. “The Metro Tournament was my first college victory and I think it came on my birthday.”

Ste-Marie qualified for the U.S. Women’s Open as an amateur in 1988. She also qualified three times as a professional in 1996-98. Ste-Marie played in LPGA tournaments and had a long career on the Futures Tour, which visited Quail Heights Country Club.

Ste-Marie lives in Annapolis, Md., with husband Bill McKeon. Their children are Kyle, 8, Noah, 5, and Taylor, 9 months.

“I have been living in Annapolis since 1999 and am working as the assistant pro at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Club,” Ste-Marie said. “The head pro is the men’s golf coach.”

Ste-Marie’s husband and children were at the ceremony, along with all the Ste-Marie family from Lake City.

“It was a thrilling moment,” Ste-Marie said. “It is the highlight of my life as far as my golf career.”
