Although the school superintendent position may be vacant following Grady “Sam” Markham’s resignation last week, school officials want parents and community members to know that the district is in good hands.
Assistant superintendent of instruction Lex Carswell is handling day-to-day operations within the school district, based on a memorandum issued by Markham before his resignation on Friday.
Carswell said Wednesday that he and assistant superintendent of administration Narragansett Smith meet several times daily to discuss matters within the district and reach an agreement on a decision.
“We have tremendous leadership, both at the school level and the district level,” Carswell said. “Everything is moving forward and the school district is running great on a daily basis.”
They will continue to run the daily operations of the district until Nov. 18 at the latest, when superintendent elect Mike Millikin assumes the role of superintendent. Millikin won the election on Aug. 26 when he obtained more than 50 percent of the vote.
Officials don’t believe that it will take that long for the position to be filled, however.
According to Florida statutes and school board attorney Guy Norris, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist has the option to appoint an interim school superintendent if deemed necessary. Norris said that he expects Crist to make an appointment and one of his top choices would be Millikin, since he is the incoming superintendent.
Millikin, being a former district employee, has undergone required background checks by Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Norris said, an item required for a gubernatorial appointment.
Millikin said he has completed the required paperwork — a gubernatorial appointment questionnaire — and mailed it Wednesday to the governor’s office for consideration for an interim appointment if Crist chooses to make one.
It was unclear Wednesday, however, if Crist would choose to make an appointment. A spokeswoman from the governor’s office said Wednesday afternoon that Crist was still reviewing the matter and has yet to make a decision whether or not to appoint an interim superintendent for Markham’s remaining term.
She gave no time table on a decision.
