Accident victim’s identity released
Fertilizer company employee died in Thursday mishap.

The Mayo Fertilizer Company employee killed Thursday morning when more than 2,000 pounds of granulated fertilizer fell on him has been identified as Ronald Priest.
According to Columbia County Sheriff’s Office reports, Priest, 56, of Hawthorne, was killed Thursday as he was working in a bin at the facility when a stack of three industrial sized bags of fertilizer fell over, broke open and trapped him underneath.
The incident occurred around 10 a.m. Thursday at the Mayo Fertilizer Company, east of Lake City on McClousky Street. No other employees were reported to be injured in the mishap.
Co-workers attempted to revive Priest, but were unsuccessful in their efforts. Emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
The body was taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Jacksonville for a complete autopsy and to determine the cause of death. However, the sheriff’s office did not receive the preliminary autopsy results Friday, but are expecting to have a copy of the report by next week.
The Mayo Fertilizer Company is investigating the incident.
